The 2.3L EcoBoost 4 with 305 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of twist is going to be the go to choice for those looking to meld performance and efficiency. Ford says the new 2.3L was developed specifically for Mustang, what they mean is that the intake manifold and turbo houses have been optimized to breathe better than say the Lincoln MKC which also uses the 2.3.
Scott Makowski, EcoBoost Powertrain Engineering Manager:
The most impressive piece of engineering in the 2.3L EcoBoost is the integrated exhaust manifold that separates the inner 2 and outer 2 exhaust pulses. Each has an individual inlet passage to the turbo meaning you eliminate losses from collusion and force feed the pulses directly through the turbine wheel. What this does is provides gobs of low-down torque similar to a twin turbo set up.“This EcoBoost engine delivers the healthy output that Mustang drivers expect regardless of the speed, this EcoBoost engine might be small in displacement, but it delivers where a Mustang driver expects it with a broad, flat torque curve and great driveability under any conditions."
