The 2.3L EcoBoost 4 with 305 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of twist is going to be the go to choice for those looking to meld performance and efficiency. Ford says the new 2.3L was developed specifically for Mustang, what they mean is that the intake manifold and turbo houses have been optimized to breathe better than say the Lincoln MKC which also uses the 2.3.

Scott Makowski, EcoBoost Powertrain Engineering Manager:

“This EcoBoost engine delivers the healthy output that Mustang drivers expect regardless of the speed, this EcoBoost engine might be small in displacement, but it delivers where a Mustang driver expects it with a broad, flat torque curve and great driveability under any conditions."
The most impressive piece of engineering in the 2.3L EcoBoost is the integrated exhaust manifold that separates the inner 2 and outer 2 exhaust pulses. Each has an individual inlet passage to the turbo meaning you eliminate losses from collusion and force feed the pulses directly through the turbine wheel. What this does is provides gobs of low-down torque similar to a twin turbo set up.

  • Forged-steel crankshaft
  • Piston-cooling jets
  • Steel piston ring carriers
  • Premium bearing materials
  • Upgraded valve seat materials
  • Forged-steel connecting rods
  • High-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block with ladder-frame bearing caps
  • Deep-sump, die-cast aluminum oil pan

I wouldnt say the Ecoboost is a true Mustang engine

its a good engine that would do well in a Mustang

But its not a true Mustang engine.. A true mustang engine would be a V8 :)
It can be seen as being true, as in true to what the mustang is about, being suitable for the mustang and not something that creates a horrible combination. It does after all have really good power output

A "true" Mustang engine would have to be a V8 but I think that the EcoBoost engine is great for someone who wants a more practical Mustang instead of a roaring one. I'm pretty sure Ford won some awards for this engine. I think it will be around for a while.

bigger turbo might be good for the reliability of this engine, best to keep it smaller with a lower output, just something good enough to get the power that's needed. everyone wants more power, best to depend on aftermarket mods to do that

I think you guys are getting caught up with the number of cylinders. When I say true Mustang engine, I mean something with smooth power delivery and engaging to drive. V6 Mustangs have always FAR outsold the 8's....

so its a good alternative to the V6

wouldn't call it a true mustang engine

true would mean loyal and honest to its roots and history.

I know some older Mustangs had 4 cylinders but they really didnt do that well nor do they retain their value that well.

Most people consider the bigger engines to be the real Mustangs.
