Ford CEO Mark Fields has said that there will be a self-driving car on the market possibly in the next five years. He has admitted that Ford will not have the honor of putting the first self-driving car on the market because Ford is focusing on driver-assist technologies.

Fields explains the company's strategy:

The carmaker wants to “democratize” technology that assists drivers across its model line and offer it at prices that even economy-car buyers could buy, Fields said.

You're giving Fields FAR less credit then he deserves here. He's stuck himself firmly in the Toyota camp by saying the AI can not, will not supplant the Driver. Its impossible...
