I'm looking for ways to lighten my car; it's just too heavy for its size, IMO. Taking off the engine cover seems like a simple way to start. Has anybody here left theirs off? Does it do anything useful, or is it safe to stick it on a shelf in the garage?

It's primarily cosmetic. However the minuscule weight savings is hardly worth it IMHO. What's that cover weigh? Less than a pound I bet. Removing the rear seat would save you a whole lot more if you're really wanting to drop some weight for free.

I might yank the rear seat, but not now while I still have the new car smell. The engine cover is coming off for the catch-can install, so it will be easier to leave it off than put it back on. It's not much weight, but I expect to be whittling it down just one tiny bit at a time until all the tiny bits add up to something worthwhile.
