Cold Air Intake

I was wondering what other people recommend for a first performance mod in terms of CAI. Also, if I purchased one then would it be necessary to tune it or would I be able to get the same performance aspects out of a non-tuned CAI for my 16' ecoboost.

I just put a JLT CAI on my wife's 2016 Ecoboost. I choose the JLT for a couple of reasons. I've used JLT CAI's on past Mustangs and they are a good quality kit which I've never had an issue with. Additionally the JLT CAI for the Ecoboost is designed so that if you eventually move up to a larger turbo you can continue to use it with just a slight modification.

As for performance gains... there may be a few ponies & torque increase, but not enough to register on the butt-dyno. However I'm sure if you had the car tuned to take advantage of the CAI you'll see much bigger increases. It definitely increases the level on "intake" noise and if you don't cap off the port you'll get to enjoy the stock BOV sound a bit more.

The answer to your questions is not exactly. Without a tune or with a tune, you will see a decrease in HP BUT and increase in torque. Most CAI configurations have been proven to rob the engine of HP ~10 - 15. However, if you were to use an AirRaid intake tube and keep the factory air box and replace the filter with K&N for example, you will see some gains stock! The factory air box for whatever reason seems very well primed for the Ecoboost.

Please explain why you think this? Pretty "general" statement you're making there. Most CAI configurations have been proven to rob the engine of of HP?? Please link us to this "Proof" you speak of because in all my years of playing and modding performance vehicles this has not been the case.

Increasing intake flow by reducing restrictions will almost always result in a measurable performance gain.

i have the MAPerformance cai and love it! it gives you a lot of turbo noise! as for tuning i'm not sure how much just the intake does alone because i installed it and the cobb accessport at the same time, but couldn't be happier with the two!
